San Juan County is located in the heart of the San Juan Mountains of southwestern Colorado. Elevation range is from about 8,500 to 14,000 feet. Historically gold & silver mining, milling, exploration & development accounted for a large percentage of the county's economy. However, the last working mine closed in 1992 causing serious impacts upon the community. Today tourism & outdoor recreational opportunities such as hiking, camping, jeeping, mountain climbing & cross-country skiing economy.
