Locating mechanical and electrical equipment on a roof is often necessary for space and efficiency in a building design. However, it can be challenging to provide a means for safe maintenance access while preserving the roof membrane and structural integrity and not interfering with other rooftop equipment. This course presents the components that comprise rooftop support systems designed to solve these challenges, as well as system design considerations and compliance with the International Building Code® (IBC®) and the International Mechanical Code® (IMC®).

This course provides an introduction to air curtains and their value in a wide range of building types, along with additional opportunities in specialty applications. Learn how and where air curtain units can be installed within a building to enhance its overall operational performance and functionality. Discover how air curtains can reduce building temperature loss, energy consumption, and windborne dirt, dust, and other pathogens and offer many other benefits. The various codes and standards that promote the use of air curtains are also discussed in order to understand how to select and install the most appropriate air curtain unit.

This presentation aims to aid architects, engineers, and specification writers in choosing anchoring systems to comply with the 2022 edition of The Masonry Society’s (TMS) TMS 402 Building Code Requirements for Masonry Structures and the International Building Code® (IBC®).

Outdoor decks are commonly desired by homeowners and commercial property owners for both new and existing properties. Wood has long been the structural choice for outdoor deck materials. However, wood has disadvantages that can be mitigated with steel deck framing structural construction. In this course, we will discover that light-gauge steel (LGS) is lighter in weight than structural wood, is less susceptible to deterioration due to the elements and pests, requires less maintenance over time, is a sustainable material, and offers unparalleled safety features for dead loads, live loads, and environmental loads such as snow, earthquakes, and wind. Steel deck framing is quick to erect and provides for longer spans than wood of similar cross-sectional size. Structural materials can be easily lifted, and waste is reduced.

Fire control for high-rise building facades requires active and passive systems to work in tandem. This course explains how passive fire protection systems for building envelopes should be used to create fire containment compartments to control fire spread; also addressed are the codes, standards, testing, and compliance routes that apply to verify material and system performance. The course provides detailed illustrations of how the materials must be designed and installed to create effective fire containment compartments and explains how they relate to active fire prevention systems.
