Security entrance control is essential to manage the flow of visitor and authorized user traffic through secured or restricted areas. A wide range of products with multiple types of technologies are available, and a host of buzz words describing their operation abound in this industry. Join us as we journey through the range of products, their operation, the level of security they provide, and both building code and ADA compliance. Security entrance control enhances the safety and peace-of-mind for of employees, residents, passengers, customers, visitors, etc. by providing automatic security screening of those who try to enter and exit the secured space. This secured space may be a campus, an entire building, or designated area within the building. Security entrance control occurs at office and residential buildings, healthcare facilities, entertainment complexes, transportation facilities, campuses, shopping locations, and anywhere that people enter and exit. The security entrance combined with credentialing equipment and software that limits use to only authorized personnel, make for a seamless passage into a secure area. Not only do security entrances control access and/or egress, they provide a visual presence that serves as a deterrent. SECURITY IS A MUST IN TODAY’S WORLD.

The Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) health system is among the nation's top comprehensive academic health sciences centers. Infection and contamination control are critical to the hospital's infrastructure to not only protect patients but also their providers during the delivery of care. Well-designed building engineering systems play a key role in ensuring air supply and circulation, pressurization, hazardous exhaust, and plumbing systems have all been optimized for comfort, health, and safety. MUSC worked with LS3P & RMF Engineering on two recent renovation projects –– the Ashley River Tower bone marrow transplant outpatient clinic and the Hollings Cancer Center chemo pharmacy –– that both highlight best practices in infection and contamination control for today while preparing for the potential of tomorrow.

This presentation celebrates the value of incorporating artisanal, handcrafted fixtures and furnishings into a building’s design. Not only are these products unique, functional, and aesthetically appealing, but they can also establish a sense of connection with their maker. Many artisanal handcrafted products are made using traditional techniques that have been passed down over time, often from generation to generation. And because many of these products are made from sustainable, recycled or reclaimed materials that are locally available, they can help reduce the environmental impact of a new build. This course illustrates how sourcing artisan-made products for their projects can allow designers and builders to effect social, economic and environmental change.

Over time urban parks and other open landscaped areas are being lost to development. One solution to mitigate this issue is to reconsider undeveloped areas such as building roofs to create green amenity spaces. Amenity decks can provide some alleviation of lost green space, while affording developers the potential to monetize unutilized spaces in their buildings and provide an advantage over older buildings to attract tenants.

Modern lab facilities have evolved to be more flexible, adaptable, and sustainable. They are safer for occupants to work in, and more economical to operate. Building systems have evolved to support these needs, and to support scientific advancement by delivering greater capability and performance. This is true of building utilities in general, and specifically true of building vacuum systems. Local vacuum networks are economical and sustainable systems which deliver deep, stable, high-quality vacuum to lab buildings by taking a modular, yet scalable, approach. This course will compare local vacuum networks against central vacuum systems with respect to the components used as well as design and project execution considerations. Brief case studies of representative installations will be used to highlight the suitability of this strategy for building-wide vacuum supply.

This course explores the climate positive benefits of materials already in use in most commercial and residential interiors. Decorative composite wood panels (TFL) begin in FSC certified forests by utilizing over 99% harvested wood fiber; are manufactured in extremely efficient facilities; and replace rare and fragile natural materials in everyday and high-use applications. The materials themselves have been assessed via an LCIA to have a negative carbon footprint (i.e., are naturally "climate positive"). Producers' adherence to FSC guidelines, and the material's ability to replace less sustainable, more fragile alternatives, only add to their overall contribution to climate and human health.
