Elevators are integral to accessible, smooth, and efficient operations in many applications. For low-rise buildings, hydraulic elevators or gearless machine room-less (MRL) elevators are most common; this course compares the two in terms of sustainability and cost. Also presented are the history of the elevator, types of elevators suitable for installation in a range of buildings, the distinctions between proprietary and nonproprietary elevator systems, and recommendations on how to specify a nonproprietary system to maximize its long-term benefits.

Upon completion of this course, the Learner should be able to:

  • Summarize the history of elevators and the different types used today to provide equal access and convenience in a variety of applications.
  • Differentiate between the two types of hoist mechanisms, hydraulic and traction, and describe the elevator types in each category.
  • Evaluate the benefits and drawbacks of hydraulic and gearless MRL elevators for low-rise buildings in terms of space, life cycle costs, and sustainability.
  • Differentiate proprietary from nonproprietary elevator systems that meet the same safety standards and code requirements and discuss the advantages and methods of specifying a nonproprietary system.

Approximately 1 hour. Delivered online, at your own pace.
