This course describes how solar reflective cool roof and wall materials help protect individuals and communities from the impacts of extreme heat and discusses the factors that influence energy savings and performance. The course also notes various climate resilience initiatives, green building programs, and energy codes that require or promote the use of cool roofs or walls and concludes by explaining the important role of third-party product ratings and the educational resources available online.

Background:
Sarah Yuko Schneider is the Deputy Director of the Cool Roof Rating Council (CRRC), a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that provides objective, scientific information related to cool surfaces to critical discussions and informed decisions about the impacts of heat islands, extreme heat, and energy use in the built environment. She joined the organization in 2013 and oversees policy and standards development, ANSI and ISO accreditations, code advocacy, and outreach and education activities in the US and internationally.
Prior to the CRRC, Sarah worked as a consultant to energy utilities for the development of energy and water efficiency codes and standards; she developed stakeholder outreach materials for California Marine Protected Areas for the California Department of Fish and Wildlife; and she managed a municipal energy program in Northern California. Sarah has a Master’s degree in Public Policy with a focus in Environmental Justice and a Bachelor of Science in Environmental Science.
