With the global rise in natural disasters and the increasing need for sustainable environments, resiliency has become a necessity in the design and building industries. This course provides an overview of resilient design, how it relates to building codes and standards, and the role it plays in ensuring the safety and sustainability of the built environment. It examines the role masonry construction plays in meeting resilient design goals and the inherent properties of masonry that make it resilient and provides examples and case studies of resilient design strategies.

Background:
Nick Lang represents CMHA as its Vice President of Engineering and Advocacy, Masonry. In this capacity, he oversees a variety of technical initiatives related to masonry products and systems, including association efforts at ASTM International and the development and maintenance of technical resources. He also directs activities related to government affairs and lobbying. Mr. Lang previously was the VP of Business Development, Director of Research and Development, and Laboratory Manager for the National Concrete Masonry Association.
Mr. Lang is a member of ASTM International and subcommittee chairman for C15.03 on Concrete Masonry Units. He is also a member of several other technical committees, including C09 on Concrete and Concrete Aggregates, C12 on Mortars and Grouts for Unit Masonry, and E06 on Performance of Buildings. He received the ASTM Award of Merit from Committee C15 and is currently a member of ASTM’s Committee on Standards (COS). He is also a member of The Masonry Society and the American Concrete Institute.
Mr. Lang received a Bachelor of Science degree in materials science and engineering from the University of Pittsburgh. He is a registered professional engineer in Maryland.
