The 2022 Inflation Reduction Act shines a light on how low-carbon building material selection is one of the keys to reducing greenhouse gas emissions in the US. High-performance, sustainable products and thoughtful assemblies designed with the building life cycle in mind are critical to the future of our sustainable communities. This course provides a look at how low-carbon and sustainability considerations are activated from product to building design. Factors impacting a sustainable building life cycle are discussed to help architects and owners with building performance that meets the design intent not just on paper but also in use.

Background:
Mitch Gilbert is a mechanical engineer and a Six Sigma Black Belt with 25+ years working in the commercial roofing industry. He also works as an adjunct instructor in the mechanical engineering department at Saginaw Valley State University mentoring engineers who are beginning their careers. As the Director of R&D for Duro-Last Roofing, Mitch and his team have driven company sustainability initiatives ranging from raw material selection and energy usage during manufacturing to proper use and processing of both postindustrial and postconsumer recycled materials. Mitch has worked with the Michigan Recycling Coalition to enhance Duro-Last's long-standing commitment to developing end use products that can be made from postconsumer materials as well as new recycling methods.
Mitch is a graduate of Saginaw Valley State University with a bachelor's degree of science (BS) in mechanical engineering. He is also a Six Sigma Black Belt and Lean Champion from Michigan Manufacturing Technology Center.
Richard Hayden has just retired from his role as the national Garden Roof Department Manager for American Hydrotech, Inc., where he managed staff that provide engineered LiteTop® soils, drainage materials, plants, edgings, and other supplies to contractors across the United States. Richard was also responsible for the Garden Roof QA/QC program, development of new product lines, and expansion of the use of Garden Roof Assembly nationwide. He has been a practicing landscape architect and infrastructure/streetscape/urban designer for more than 30 years, with a broad range of project experiences.
Richard is especially skilled with challenging infrastructure projects and is often called on to help merge aesthetics with engineering needs. He is a member of the American Society of Landscape Architects, having served as President of the Illinois chapter. Richard is also a member of Lambda Alpha International, the international land economics society. He is a licensed landscape architect and holds a certificate from the Council of Landscape Architecture Registration Boards (CLARB). He is involved in many civic activities in his hometown of Park Ridge, including service as former Commissioner on the City of Park Ridge Appearance Commission and a past position on the Park Ridge Uptown Redevelopment Advisory Commission.
Michal (Elle) Porter, PhD currently serves as a technical project leader for DuPont's Performance Building Solutions Business, where she works to solve building science problems through innovation. Dr. Porter is highly motivated by a purpose to provide the world with the essentials of life in a sustainable way. Prior to joining DuPont, she served as a research engineer for 11 years at Dow Chemical Company. Dr. Porter holds a PhD in chemical engineering from the University of Texas at Austin, and a bachelor’s degree in polymer science from the University of Southern Mississippi.
Dr. Valentina Woodcraft is an accomplished research and development scientist with the DuPont Performance Building Solutions. Throughout her career, Dr. Woodcraft has been responsible for leading development, and implementation of innovative experimental methods and techniques in field of thermal management building envelope materials, from fundamental research to field performance analysis. Her recent work focuses on hygrothermal behavior modeling of closed cell foams. She has been a member of the Society of Plastics Engineers, the Microscopy & Microanalysis Society, and the American Physics Society. Outside DuPont, she had contributed her expertise to ANSI technical committee TC-163 as well as to ASTM.
Valentina holds a PhD in physics from the University of Tennessee. Her hobbies include home improvement remodeling, educational outreach to local community, learning new skills, and empowering people to reach for their dreams.
